'Spitting in public is not only gross, but it's also a health hazard,' say experts in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak.
Spitting in public areas is fairly prevalent in India, but scientists say it can be harmful to public health because it contains bacteria. COVID-19 is spread via droplets.
According to the World Health Organization, the new coronavirus has spread to 177 countries, infecting more than 7.2 lakh individuals and causing more than 34,000 deaths worldwide (on March 30). Many countries have imposed a complete lockdown to keep people separated from one another while also encouraging them to maintain cleanliness and wash their hands properly.
Basanta Kumar Kar, the Global Nutrition Leadership and Transform Nutrition Champion Award winner, said,
The requirement of the hour is the stop-spitting movement. This heinous habit has the potential to contaminate people's lives. Many people have the tendency of spitting wherever they go, whether they are walking, driving, or being driven. For them, roads and public spaces are nothing more than bathrooms where they can spit directly into the path of onlookers. Saliva can carry live bacteria for up to 24 hours and can cause any respiratory disease, including COVID-19, which is caused by respiratory droplets and can be transmitted when these droplets enter the mouth.
If a person is on the receiving end of the spit, according to Dr. Meenakshi Jain, Associate Director, Internal Medicine, Max Healthcare, Patparganj, and Noida, they should avoid touching the area until it has been cleaned with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer. She went on to say that if spit gets on one's clothes, they should change as quickly as possible and wash their hands afterward. She also suggests washing the clothing in hot water to sanitize them.
She advised that correct spit etiquette be followed. "She said," she explained.
If spitting becomes unavoidable in public areas, do so quietly and carefully. Carry tissues for spit and mucus and dispose of them as soon as possible after usage.
